At some point in time almost all homeowners find themselves either needing to plant lawn or patch the existing lawn that they have. There’s a few simple steps to take in order to ensure success. First of all we want to be able to pick the right seed thinking about shade, how much traffic the lawn is going to have, how much wind the lawn is going to have, and how much water is available to the lawn. Once we pick the right seed we want to think about seed bed. Here we’re just patching a lawn, so we want to work that seedbed up a little bit, so that as we plant this seed we can try to get all of the seed covered with about a quarter inch of soil.
Remember these seeds are really tiny and they they need soil on top of them but they don’t need a lot of soil.
So then we want to remember the seed is evolved by growing up in the footprint of a buffalo. It really needs a firm seedbed we can use a roller but we can simply walk on it. Once we get that nice and firm we’re then going to add some organic matter. Here I’ll put some peat moss on top of this seed, we could also use straw leaves left over from last year any organic matter.
That organic matters are going to help us hold moisture there for the seed to germinate but also to grow. So now that we’ve got organic matter down we’re going to water that, we’re going to water it enough to get that seed germinated and then what we’re going to remember is boy once that grass starts to grow it’s just a tiny little hair.
So once we get that watered, we can actually fill our soil in organic matter and we want it to feel like a wrung out towel. This is Hudson Hill, University of Wyoming extension. You’re watching from the ground up.
