What’S up everyone Welcome back to The DurbinCompound. If you haven’t met me already, my name is Devin Durbin. So today, on the channelwe’re continuing on with our lawn maintenancechecklist/playlist, for you guys.Today we’re going to go over overseedingand, just how I do it.
This is my opinion.I’m, not a pro, but this is how I’vealways done it, And I’ve had great success with it.If you’re interested in how I do it stay tuned. All right, guys,
So what we’re going to do is I’mgoing to talk over some video that I’m goingto roll in here And we’re going to talk abouta couple different ways that this can be done.And. Of course, the best time to overseedis in the fall so that the seeds have time. Togerminate And then they basically go dormant inthe winter And then they’ll come through freshin the spring
If you’re impatient, like me, you arealso able to overseed in the fall or in the spring. They will not — the grass will kind of besetting up and starting to come through — May June time frame, And it leaves them to be alittle bit vulnerable to that summer. Drought. So, this is an area where you’re, probably goingto, have to water it through the summerto, keep it going — to make sure that summerdrought doesn’t kill off that fresh grass.So. There are many different ways to go: aboutoverseeding
You can do a couple differentthings. What we’re going to do today is we’regoing to dethatch. We have the abilityto, have a dethatcher, So we’re going to dethatchthe little side yard in front of the garden shed. We’re going to then rakeit away.
And then we’re going to overseed, So dethatching is basically tines that break up theundergrowth in the grass. So, while you’re watchingthis video here, it’s really no rhyme or reason onhow you go about dethatching. You can do it in anyway shape or form as long as you get every area.
Igo over the areas twice
That, basically, getsrid of all that dead grass and all that cutgrass that you have cut in your couple lawnmowings. It allows that to be pulled up out of thegrass roots. So this creates a great place for thegrass seed to sit and basically germinate and grow.So. Another point that comes when I say germinateis: you do not want to do this anytime, withinsix weeks of your fertilizing, So fertilizer willbasically keep the grass seed fromgerminating
So if you’re fertilizingin the early spring, you want to make sure thatyou are waiting six weeks before you overseed. And, then after you overseed, you want to makesure. You wait six weeks before you do it again, So I did my original fertilizing in the earlyspring. I think it was early March And itis now the middle of May
So I have waited over amonth to do this And then I will wait until it istime to apply my summer lawn food in the middleof June July time frame.
So, just to let you knowthat that fertilizer will keep your grass seedsfrom germinating. Keep that in mind. So once youhave, the area dethatched or some people can justrake it.
If you don’t even want to rake it thereare plenty of products out there that allow theopportunity … they come mixed in with grass or hayand. You basically just spread it out. Thoseare, quick patch kits and stuff like that.
So I have a couple thin areas here: I’ll show you inthe video, where the grass just isn’t growing. It’s coming in kind of thin and sparse And forwhatever reason it’s just not coming in right. So those are the areas that I focused and wentover with the dethatcher. A couple timesto get them really broken up.
So, of course, this is, after you already have an establishedlawn — this process. If you are starting fresh, witha brand new lawn and you have basically nograss growing you’re – definitely going to want totill up the yard You’re going to want to lay yourgrass seed and then till it up again.
Getthat grass seed down in the soil And then you’llwant to basically cover it with hay and thenwater. It often
So it’s a totally different process. This is strictly just overseeding.Now. I’M going to set up my grass seeder.I, usually seed on five or six on a rotary sprayer or a rotary spreader. This is what I’m using nowis a walk behind rotary spreader
Right now, Ihave it set on six. Six is usually what I do it on.Five on a hand, spreader Six on a walk behind Andin this small area of about 30 X 40, I’m spreadingtwo pounds of grass seed
So I usually just doa cross hatch pattern and allow it to basicallyoverlap every way I can to make sure that Ididn’t miss anything. So once I do this, you really want to time this right with the watercoming in naturally. Maybe it’s going to rain inthe next couple days In the forecast it has set upfor the next three days, there’s going to be rain. But, it’s also a good idea to go ahead and waterin that grass seed
So I set up a sprinklerand: just have it on full and going back andforth. I will water it in for about an houror about a half to a three-quarter inchof rain coverage on the entire area.Now. The rest will be taken care of by mother natureof course And I’ll. Let it rain over the nextthree days, So I’ll be careful to tread on thisarea and not really beat it down all that much
And then, hopefully, in June July time, framewe’ll see some nice hearty grass that isabsolutely awesome when you cut it downand it fills in all those dead areas. I don’t have anything else to say about thevideo. If you have any questions or concernson overseeding, it’s really not that difficult Ireally, just you know rough up those areas get it ready to go. Let the grass seed lay downin the grass and that’s pretty much it
So I hope you guys find this video helpful, Give me athumbs up Or a thumbs down Whatever you’re into. If you have any questions, be sure to put them inthe comments.
