– In this video, we’re gonna share seven tips to help you keep your lawn green despite the tough conditions that come with summer months. They’re gonna range in difficulty from relatively easy to a bit more complicated as we move throughout the list. Let’s get started. Our first tip to help you get an amazing lawn during the summer months is around choosing the right mowing height. Now, it’s really easy to get caught up in wanting to have your lawn as short as possible, but you really gotta be realistic around how much time you really have to work on your lawn.
If you’re cutting your lawn at a height of two inches or shorter, that’s gonna require that you be able to get out there at least twice a week to keep the lawn green between mowings.
It’s better to have your lawn taller and green than shorter with scalp marks all throughout it. So the first tip is choose your mowing height carefully. I recommend twice per week, but you know what your schedule is like. On to our second tip.
Our second tip for keeping your lawn looking amazing during the summer months is around the topic of watering. Your lawn needs at least one inch of water per week to look its absolute best during summer months. Now, it doesn’t really matter if that water comes from irrigation like you see here or from rainfall, but the idea is you’ve gotta keep the lawn hydrated. Now, there are some tools like moisture managers such as Hydretain that can help reduce watering requirements but nothing really beats plain old H2O. On to our third tip.
Our third tip for an amazing lawn this summer is to ensure that you’re doing proper fertilization. Now, contrary to popular belief, your lawn does in fact need fertilizer throughout the summer months. It’s actively growing, so you need to feed it. In the golf course lawn program, we use a combination of biostimulants like Essential-G that you see here along with liquid products and a granular fertilizer.
Now, you’ll see here that the fertilizer has got a big question mark on it because what’s right for my lawn and my particular soil might not be right for your lawn.
So how do you figure out which fertilizer you should use on your lawn? The best way is by using a soil test kit like the one I’m showing you here from My Soil. Using this at the beginning of the season, or even right now is gonna tell you exactly what should be on this bag before you put it into your soil. Time for tip number four. Our fourth tip for an amazing lawn this summer is to consider incorporating a product like Primo Maxx into your long care program.
Now, Primo Maxx is a plant growth regulator, which helps slow down how quickly your grass grows. With everything that we’re gonna be doing, proper mowing, proper watering, proper fertilization, the grass is gonna grow and using a product like this will help slow that down a little bit.
It’s gonna increase your disease resistance, reduce watering requirements slightly, and allow your lawn to maintain that deep green color between mowing. Once you start using this stuff, you’ll wonder why you waited so long. Our fifth tip for an amazing lawn this summer is to aerate your lawn.
Lawn aeration is the process of punching small holes throughout the entire lawn, with the main goal of relieving compaction. This allows water, air, and nutrients to get down into the soil where they can provide the most benefit.
Now, options for getting an aerator are to rent one from your local big box store, or if you happen to have an interchangeable cartridge system mower, you can use a cartridge like this, which is a soil roller to produce similar results. We’re almost there. On to tip number six.
Our sixth tip is to consider verti-cutting your lawn. Now, if you’ve been doing everything we suggested up to this point, you’re gonna find your lawn is gonna start thickening up more and more and more. Now while that may sound good at the outset, once you get into the middle of July towards August timeframe, the lawn being overly thick can begin to cause some problems. You may notice you may get scalping in areas that you didn’t get scalping before. And the mow will begin to float on the lawn causing an inconsistent cut.
A verti-cutter will vertically mow the lawn, which will help thin it out and help correct those problems.
If you have an interchangeable cartridge system mower, you can easily get one of these cartridges for doing the work yourself, or a verti-cutter is easily available at any local equipment rental. On to our seventh and final tip. It’s my favorite one. Our seventh tip is to consider top dressing or leveling your bumpy lawn.
Now, top dressing is the process of spreading sand and soil over the entire lawn with the goal of smoothing out any bumpy and uneven areas. Now, it is an involved process that does require planning to pull off successfully, which is why I saved this one for last.
But it has tons of benefits that many of the other tips do not have. These include improved drainage and improved nutrient uptake, as well as creating a look that your neighbors are absolutely gonna envy. Now, I’ve thrown a lot at you guys, but I really wanna share one more tip.
I know I said I had seven, but really I’ve got a bonus. I gotta give you guys a bonus, right? And that bonus tip is to really enjoy the process, to enjoy the journey of creating your lawn, to transforming it into whatever that happens to be. You might want the goal of having a lawn that looks like this, which is, you know, tabletop smooth and tons of fun to play sports on.
Or perhaps your goal is to have a lawn that is taller, but it really lush and green.
Just realize that wherever your lawn is now, it didn’t get there overnight, and that you transforming it to whatever your goal happens to be for your lawn isn’t gonna happen overnight either. All lawns have problem areas. Yours is no different. Mine is no different. So just celebrate those small wins, enjoy the journey, and enjoy the process of transforming your lawn.
Now, I’ve throw a lot at you guys and to help go into more detail on each one of these tips, I put together a playlist right here for you guys to watch next. Thank you guys so much for watching. I will see you in the next videos..
